EMMA VAN SCHALKWYK
Unwalked Terrain
This interactive piece regards the idea of emplacement within ones place. The digital rendering of this work, as broken down in the video above, goes through the work of specifically outlining bodies that may pass in front of the camera and then almost counterintuitively camouflaging them back into the projected surroundings. The idea that one is separate from whilst simultaneously a part of ones environment is a phenomena shared between the digital and the natural realm. Whilst humans have established themselves as unique or distinct from the rest of the natural world, we still remain biologically rooted in the natural realm. Similarly, we remain physically separate from the virtual realm of the digital, but are so extensively represented within it that this representation seems to become a form of virtual presence. By making room for seemingly contradictory modes of thinking such as this we allow ourselves to gain deeper understandings on the ways in which we exist and connect to that which exists around us.
